The short answer, and where it comes from
Leave it on for the time printed on the pack, and take it off at the end of that window rather than when you remember. For the masks on this site that is most often 10 to 15 minutes, and for a sheet mask specifically, 12.5 to 20.
That is not a rule of thumb. Every product record here stores the instructions printed on the pack, so the question can be counted instead of guessed: 167 of the 215 masks state a leave-on time in their own words, and the shortest asks for 5 minutes while the longest asks for 90.

How long by format: sheet, clay, cream, hydrogel
The format matters more than the brand, because the format decides what the mask is physically doing. A sheet holds an essence against the skin; a clay mask absorbs oil as it dries; a peel-off sets into a film. Here is the middle of each, as printed:

Clay is the tightest and the shortest, which surprises people who were taught to wait for the crackle. A clay mask is doing its work while it is still damp; once it has dried to a crust it is a layer of dry powder sitting on your face, and the pack asks for it off before then.
Why leaving it on longer does not do more
A sheet mask works by occlusion: a wet layer held against the skin, stopping water leaving. The effect is measurable. In a much-cited 1988 experiment, stratum corneum water content rose from 31.8% to 46.9% after thirty minutes under occlusion. The number that matters for this question is the third one the same experiment reports: one hour after the occlusion came off, the reading was 32.1%, back where it started.
The packs that ask for an hour or more
5 masks here ask for sixty minutes or more: Balea Gesichtsmaske Glass Skin Hyaluronic Be You at 90 minutes, L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Filler Glass Skin Hydrogel Glow Mask at 90 minutes, Svenja Walberg Glass Skin Mask Pink PDRN [DNA] at 60 minutes, Yeauty Glass-Skin Hydrogel Maske Kollagen & NAD+ at 60 minutes and Yeauty Glass-Skin Hydrogel Maske Kollagen & PDRN at 60 minutes. Every one of them is a hydrogel, the format that stays wet longest, so the instruction is at least physically possible in a way it would not be for a clay mask. They also share a marketing word rather than a technology: every one is sold as a “glass skin” mask. The longest instructions in the corpus belong to a trend, not to a formulation problem. An hour is still two to three times the occlusion period in the experiment above, for a gain that fades on the same schedule.
The one instruction genuinely worth ignoring is the folk version nobody printed: leave it until it dries. Only 3 of the 215 packs here say anything of the kind, and they are a peel-off and a clay mask, formats where drying is the mechanism rather than a side effect. On a sheet or hydrogel mask a dry sheet is a sheet that has stopped occluding and started evaporating, and there is no version of the instructions on any of these 215 packs that asks for that.
When the pack does not say
48 of the 215 masks here print no time at all. That is not carelessness so much as format: the silence clusters in overnight masks (15), sheet masks (14) and clay masks (7), where the answer is either obvious or open-ended.
If yours says nothing, the format answers it. A sheet or hydrogel mask comes off when the sheet stops feeling wet, which for the packs that do print a number lands at 12.5 to 20 minutes. A clay or wash-off mask comes off before it is fully dry. A sleeping mask stays on. Nothing on the label is hiding a longer, better result.
Overnight and sleeping masks
16 masks here are sold as sleeping or overnight masks, and 19 packs across all formats tell you to leave the product on while you sleep. These are the exception that makes the rule legible: they are formulated as leave-on products, closer to a rich moisturiser than to a soaked sheet, so there is nothing to take off and no occluding layer to go dry on your face.
The reverse does not follow. A sheet mask left on overnight does not become a sleeping mask; it becomes a dry sheet. And a mask carrying an acid or a retinoid is exactly the kind you should not extend on your own initiative, for reasons the frequency piece goes into.
What to do
- Set a timer for the lower number. Where a pack prints a range, the bottom of it is a full dose. The top is a limit, not a target.
- Take a sheet mask off while it is still wet. A dry sheet has stopped doing the one thing it was for.
- Do not wait for a clay mask to crack. The median instruction is 10 minutes, well before that.
- Judge the mask by what it leaves, not by how long it sits. The lasting part of the effect is the formula, and the decoded list on each product page is where that is visible.
