Where a face mask goes in your routine

Skincare order is argued about endlessly and evidenced rarely. This site has one useful thing to add: the instructions printed on 215 real masks, read and counted rather than summarised. And on the first step they are close to unanimous. 177 of 215 packs tell you to cleanse first, across every format and every price.

The logic is the same whether the mask is a €1 sheet or a €12 clay: whatever is on your face when the mask goes on is what the mask holds against your skin for the next quarter of an hour. A mask is an occlusive step, and occlusion does not discriminate between the formula and the day’s sunscreen.

This is the question people actually get wrong, and it has a clean answer, because the packs are internally consistent in a way the rest of the routine is not:

Not one hydrogel mask in this corpus asks to be rinsed off. Almost every clay and wash-off mask does. The split is not arbitrary. A sheet or hydrogel mask is a delivery device for an essence that is meant to stay on you; a clay or wash-off mask is a substance that has absorbed something and needs removing. Rinsing the first kind throws away the product you paid for. Leaving the second on leaves a layer of dried clay on your face.

59 packs tell you to pat the remaining essence in rather than wash it away, and that instruction is doing more work than it looks. It is the moment the mask stops being an occlusive step and becomes a normal one, and it is where the rest of your routine picks up.

Follow it with your usual moisturiser. Not because a mask is insufficient, but because of what the occlusion measurements show: stratum corneum water content rises sharply under a mask and returns to baseline within about an hour of it coming off. A moisturiser applied onto skin that is still holding that water is the step that keeps some of it, and it is the cheapest part of the whole routine.

Serums and actives

Put a leave-on active - a retinoid, an acid serum, a vitamin C - after the mask rather than under it, and preferably not on the same evening as an exfoliating mask at all. A mask is an occlusive layer, and occlusion increases how much of whatever is underneath gets into the skin. That is a good property when the thing underneath is your own clean face and an unhelpful one when it is a strong active you dosed for open air. Before, when it goes anywhere at all. Only 17 of the 215 packs here mention toner in their instructions, and every one that does puts it between cleansing and the mask. That is a small number, and it is worth saying what it means: for the overwhelming majority of these products the manufacturer does not consider a toner part of the procedure either way.

If you use one, use it first, on the reasoning already established - the mask holds whatever is on your face against your face. If you do not, nothing in the instructions on 215 packs suggests you are missing a step.

19 of the 215 packs specify an evening or overnight application. The rest are silent, which is the honest position: for a hydrating mask the time of day changes very little.

Two practical exceptions. A mask containing an exfoliating acid is better used in the evening, because the packs that carry one generally also carry a sun-protection caution and the skin is not going straight into daylight. And a sheet mask before an event works for a reason worth being clear-eyed about: the plumping is real, measurable and short-lived, so the timing that flatters it is an hour before, not the night before.

6. Moisturiser. The step that keeps some of what the mask just did.
