The short answer
If the pack states a frequency, use that. If it does not, the honest default for a plain hydrating mask is two or three times a week, and the real answer is that it depends on one thing: whether the ingredient list contains an acid, a retinoid, or a large amount of fragrance or alcohol. A mask with none of those is limited by your patience and your budget. A mask with any of them is limited by the ingredient.

What the packs actually say
180 of the 215 masks say nothing about frequency at all. Among the 35 that do, the wording clusters tightly:

Nobody is being cautious for the sake of it. Two or three times a week is roughly the point at which a hydrating mask stops being a treatment and starts being a habit, and, as the timing piecesets out, the hydration a mask gives you is back to baseline within an hour. There is nothing to accumulate, so the frequency question is not “how fast can I build up an effect”. It is “how often can I do this without a cost”.
One pack here goes the other way and invites daily use: SOME BY MI Daily Retinol Intense Mask. Read the list before taking that up. Daily is a reasonable instruction for a mask that is essentially a wet cloth full of humectants, and a much bigger ask for anything else. Worth noticing in this case: the pack in question declares a retinoid.
The masks where frequency really matters: acids and retinoids
35 of the 215 masks here declare an ingredient our encyclopaedia classes as an exfoliant. The commonest are Lactic Acid (19), Salicylic Acid (13), Glycolic Acid (5) and Pumice (4). These are the products where “more often” has a cost rather than just a diminishing return, because they work by removing something rather than adding it.
The regulation is worth understanding here, because it is easy to misread as reassurance. EU limits are concentration limits: Salicylic Acid sits in Annex III at 2% for face products including masks. That is a ceiling on what is in the jar, and it says nothing at all about how often you should open it. A compliant 2% mask used daily is still a 2% mask used daily.
Fragrance and alcohol change the sums quietly
136 of the 215 masks here are fragranced and 45 contain a drying alcohol. Neither is a reason to avoid a mask, and neither is dangerous at the concentrations a compliant product uses. Both are dose-related, though, and the dose is a function of how often you apply them.
The EU’s own scientific committee puts fragrance allergy as the second or third most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in Europe and North America, found in 1 to 8% of patch-tested patients. More to the point for this question, it states plainly that “the development of sensitization depends on the dose and frequency of exposure”, and that repeated or prolonged exposure raises the risk of both sensitisation and reaction.
Frequency is therefore not a neutral dial on a fragranced product the way it is on a plain one. If you are going to mask several times a week, that is precisely the case for the fragrance-free option, and where the filter for it on the catalogue earns its keep. Once a fortnight, it matters much less.
The arithmetic nobody prints
There is a second frequency question, and it is financial. 102 of the 215 masks here are single-use, and 113 give more than one application from the pack. Twice a week is a hundred applications a year. At the median price per use in this corpus, that is the difference between a habit and a subscription, which is what the cost piece works through.
It also changes what a sensible answer looks like. If a jar gives you fourteen uses and the pack says twice a week, it is a seven-week product, and buying the next one is a decision you will make seven times a year. A sheet mask bought in a five-pack at the same frequency runs out in under three weeks.
What to do
- Follow the pack when it states a frequency. 35 of these 215do, and the instruction is the manufacturer’s own read on its formula.
- Two or three times a week is a safe default for a hydrating mask with no acid, no retinoid and no long fragrance tail.
- Once a week for anything exfoliating, and not on a day you use another acid, a retinoid or a scrub.
- Check the list, not the format. A clay mask can be gentler than a sheet mask; it depends entirely on what is in it, which the decoded panel on each product page shows in order.
- If your skin is stinging or tight afterwards, that is the frequency answer. Nothing in a mask needs to sting to have worked.
