What it is
Saccharomyces is brewer's and baker's yeast. Fermenting it and filtering out the cells leaves a broth of amino acids, peptides, vitamins and sugars. Formulators use it as a humectant base in essences and masks, often in place of some of the water.
What it does well
Hydrates and softens the skin surface
The amino acids and sugars in the filtrate bind water reliably. Broader claims about renewal and radiance rest on weaker evidence.

Ferment-rich formulas occasionally cause stinging in people with very sensitive skin. The ingredient is generally well tolerated.
