What it is
Galactomyces ferment filtrate is the liquid left after a yeast-like fungus ferments a nutrient medium, then is filtered out. The filtrate contains amino acids, vitamins, organic acids and sugars, which is why it behaves as a lightweight humectant. It became famous as the core of high-end Japanese "essence" products and is now common in masks and toners.

Hydrates and improves skin smoothness and radiance
The fermentation broth is rich in humectant amino acids and sugars, which reliably improve short-term hydration. Long-term appearance benefits rest largely on manufacturer-run studies.

May reduce the look of wrinkles, spots and roughness with sustained use
A 12-month study in 86 women reported significant improvement in wrinkles, spots and roughness, but it was unblinded, had no control group and every participant used the same branded products - so placebo and regimen effects cannot be separated out.
