PVM/MA Copolymer
No meaningful concern for most people; irritation is possible but rare.
Also written as: Polyvinyl Methyl Ether/Maleic Anhydride Copolymer · Gantrez
What it is
PVM/MA copolymer is made from vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride and forms a strong, flexible film as water evaporates. In face masks it is used in peel-off formulas and to hold pigments, sunscreens or actives in place on skin; the same polymer family is used in denture adhesives and toothpastes, which is why its safety profile is well documented.
What it does well
Forms a continuous film so a peel-off mask lifts off in one piece
Film strength and adhesion are the polymer's defining properties; without a film-former, a peel-off mask simply flakes.
Strong evidence
Worth knowing
Peel-off use can tug at skin and fine hairs
The discomfort of a peel-off mask comes from mechanically removing the film, not from the polymer being irritating in itself. Removing it too vigorously can leave skin transiently red.
Matters most toPeople with sensitive or reactive skin, or with visible facial hair.
Where the EU stands
No specific restriction
Not restricted for cosmetic use in the EU; it appears in no Annex of the Cosmetics Regulation.
