What it is

Acacia senegal gum is the hardened sap of the acacia tree, harvested by tapping and used for centuries in food, ink and medicine. It dissolves in water to a low-viscosity solution that dries to a light, slightly contracting film. In masks it is used for an immediate smoothing and tightening sensation and to help suspend powders and pigments.

What it does well

    The effect is a physical film contracting slightly as it dries, and it lasts only until the film is washed off. It is genuinely noticeable but does not change the skin.

  • Rare allergy, mainly documented from inhaled dust rather than skin contact

    Gum arabic is a recognised occupational allergen for workers who inhale the powder, such as printers. Contact allergy from cosmetic use is rare, but a patch test is reasonable if you have a known reaction to it.
