Sodium Carboxymethyl Beta-Glucan

CM-glucan

Well toleratedHumectanthumectantsoothingfilm-former

No meaningful concern for most people; irritation is possible but rare.

Also written as: Carboxymethyl beta-glucan · CM-glucan · CM-BG

What it is

Beta-glucan on its own dissolves poorly in water, so carboxymethyl groups are added to make it fully water-soluble and easier to formulate at useful levels. The modified polymer keeps the soothing and film-forming behaviour of ordinary beta-glucan while producing clearer, less viscous gels. It shows up most often in calming masks, post-procedure gels and after-sun products.

What it does well

  • Calms inflammatory signalling and supports repair in skin models

Carboxymethyl beta-glucan reduced inflammatory mediators including IL-1 beta and PGE2 through the Dectin-1 receptor, improved barrier proteins and sped wound closure in a 3D skin wound model. The authors note that human clinical confirmation is still needed.

    Limited evidence

Worth knowing

  • Human clinical evidence is not yet published

The mechanistic case is reasonably detailed but rests on cell and tissue-model work. It is a sensible supporting soother, not a proven treatment.

Matters most toPeople choosing a product specifically for post-procedure or eczema-adjacent use, who should rely on clinician advice rather than this ingredient alone.

Where the EU stands

No specific restriction

Not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation; it appears in no annex and has no concentration limit.

    International Journal of Cosmetic Science · 2026 · doi:10.1111/ics.70111

Carboxymethyl beta-glucan reduced pro-inflammatory mediators via Dectin-1, improved barrier function and accelerated wound closure in skin models, with clinical studies still to come.
