Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate
GLDA
No meaningful concern for most people; irritation is possible but rare.
Also written as: GLDA · Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate (Dissolvine GL)
What it is
Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate is made from glutamic acid, which is produced by fermentation, and it binds metal ions in much the same way as EDTA. Its selling point is that it breaks down readily in wastewater treatment, so brands choosing it are usually addressing EDTA's environmental persistence rather than any skin-safety issue.
What it does well
Works like EDTA but degrades readily in the environment
It sequesters calcium, iron and copper across a wide pH range, protecting the formula from oxidation and discolouration, and it meets readily-biodegradable classification in standard OECD testing.
Moderate evidence
Where the EU stands
No specific restriction
Not restricted for cosmetic use in the EU; it appears in no Annex of the Cosmetics Regulation.
