Benzyl Benzoate

What it is

Benzyl benzoate occurs naturally in balsam of Peru, tolu balsam and ylang-ylang, and is also made synthetically. In cosmetics it works partly as a fragrance note and partly as a solvent and fixative that holds other aroma materials in place. At much higher medicinal concentrations, around 25%, it is used as a topical treatment for scabies, which is a different use entirely.

  Its solvent and fixative role means a scent lasts longer and stays evenly dispersed. This is a formulation function rather than a skin benefit.

• A declared allergen, but a weak sensitiser at cosmetic levels

  Positive patch tests are uncommon, and much of the historical concern comes from its association with balsam of Peru, a more potent allergen mixture. Reactions to purified benzyl benzoate in modern cosmetics are infrequent.
