Beta-Glucan

What it is

Beta-glucans are chains of glucose found in the cell walls of yeast and fungi and in the bran of oats and barley. The cosmetic versions are purified extracts, and the source matters: oat beta-glucan is mainly a moisture-binding, film-forming soother, while yeast and mushroom beta-glucans are the ones studied for effects on skin immune receptors. Formulators use it in masks for a combination of slippery hydration and a calming, less-red look after irritation, sun or procedures.

What it does well

• Binds water and improves skin surface moisture

  Beta-glucan forms a hydrated film on skin and reviews of the cosmetic literature consistently report moisturising and smoothing effects. The measurements come mainly from small manufacturer-run studies rather than large independent trials.

  Moderate evidence

• Calms the appearance of irritated or post-procedure skin

  Laboratory work shows beta-glucan engaging the Dectin-1 receptor on skin immune cells and suppressing inflammatory mediators such as IL-1 beta and PGE2, and it appears in reviews of post-laser topical agents. Human trials are small and mostly open-label.

• Supports wound repair and barrier proteins in skin models

  Carboxymethylated beta-glucan accelerated wound closure and increased barrier protein expression in 3D reconstructed skin models. The authors themselves note that clinical studies are still needed to confirm this.

• Most evidence is laboratory or supplier-funded, not independent clinical trials

  The mechanistic work is genuine but human data on cosmetic beta-glucan is thin, and most published skin studies are reviews, cell work or small open-label evaluations. Treat it as a good supporting soother rather than a proven active.

• Source-related sensitivity in rare cases
