Chondrus Crispus

What it is

Chondrus crispus is the red alga known as Irish moss, and this row is the seaweed itself rather than a purified fraction of it: the material from the whole alga, the dried and ground powder, or an extract. It is the same seaweed carrageenan comes from, which is why it behaves like a gelling agent, and why this site lists carrageenan separately. In masks it is almost entirely a jelly and hydrogel ingredient.

What it does well

• Gels and holds the shape of a jelly or hydrogel mask

  The gelling chemistry of this seaweed is long established and is the reason it is used at all. A 24-hour occlusive patch test of the powder at 100% in twelve subjects was non-irritating, and the Expert Panel concluded the whole alga, its powder and its extract are all safe as used in cosmetics.

Worth knowing

• The marine-superfood framing outruns what the ingredient does

  Dried Chondrus crispus is reported as roughly 27.7% ash, 4.58% potassium and 0.0736% iodine - a mineral-rich seaweed, which is what the front of the pack tends to sell. Inside a mask its job is texture. Any benefit you feel comes from the gel holding water against skin and from whatever else is in the formula.
