Kojic Acid Turmeric Brightening Gel Mask

Four brightening agents on one list - niacinamide fifth, then turmeric, ascorbic acid and kojic acid, with retinol dead last. Niacinamide is the only one high enough to matter much; the rest sit below the thickeners and the guava extracts. Two guava parts are declared, flower and leaf, which is a nice touch.

What stands out in the list

Worked out from the ingredients, not the packaging claims.

  • Contains fragrance

Listed as Parfum/Fragrance, which can stand for dozens of undisclosed aroma chemicals. Fragrance is one of the most common causes of cosmetic contact allergy.

  • 2 ingredients flagged for pregnancy

Kojic Acid, Retinol are usually avoided or used with caution during pregnancy, and Retinol is normally avoided outright. This is what the ingredient entries say, not medical advice, so ask your midwife or doctor.

  • 2 concentration-capped ingredients

EU law sets a maximum for Kojic Acid, Retinol. Products on sale in the EU must comply.

  • No drying alcohol

No ethanol, alcohol denat. or isopropyl alcohol in the list. Fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol are not drying and do not count.

  • Barrier-supporting actives

Contains Niacinamide, Allantoin, ingredients with reasonable evidence for calming and supporting the skin barrier.
