Mostly the same product, differently delivered
The format is the most visible thing about a face mask and the loudest thing on the box. A sheet, a clay, a rubbery peel, a gel that dissolves. It is reasonable to assume those are different kinds of product.
On the ingredient lists, mostly they are not. Water is the first entry on 89% of the 215 masks here, and that holds inside almost every format taken separately. What the format changes is how the water is held against your face and for how long. What it usually does not change is what is in the water.

Sheet masks are the bulk of the market here at 90 of 215, and they sit almost exactly at the corpus average on every column. They are the default, not a speciality. The formats worth talking about are the ones that break the pattern, and there are three.
Clay: the one format whose name predicts an ingredient
Most format names describe a texture and promise nothing about content. Clay is the exception. All 28 of the 28 clay masks here contain at least one of Kaolin, Bentonite or Loess.
That makes clay the one word on a box you can treat as a factual claim about the formula rather than a mood. It also explains the rest of the clay row in that table: the median list is the shortest of any large format at 22.5 entries, because a mineral plus water plus a thickener genuinely is the formula, and 46% are fragrance-free.
Peel-off: where the format really is the formula
The clearest finding in this piece. There are 5 peel-off masks here, and 5 of them contain Polyvinyl Alcohol. Not just contain it. All 5 print exactly the same first three entries, in the same order. The shortest of them, Schaebens Gesichtsmaske peel off Aktivkohle, gets the whole job done in 8 entries.

Water, then denatured alcohol, then the PVA that dries into the film you peel off. That is not a coincidence between four products, it is the only way to make the format work: you need a polymer that forms a coherent sheet and a volatile solvent to get it to dry in fifteen minutes rather than an hour.
Which has a consequence the marketing never mentions. Alcohol sits second in all of them, so if alcohol is why your skin stings there is no gentler peel-off waiting for you. It is a different format you want, and the piece on alcohol works through why position matters more than presence. It is also why 0% of them are fragrance-free.
Hydrogel: long lists, high prices, little perfume
Hydrogels break the pattern in the other direction. 24 masks, and the longest median list of any format here at 35 entries. Of the formats with enough masks to describe a format at all, they are also both the dearest per use, at a median of €4.43, and the most often fragrance-free, at 63%. The single modelling mask is dearer and carries no perfume, but one mask is a product rather than a format.
The carrier explains the first part. 23 of the 24 use a seaweed or konjac gum: Chondrus Crispus on 18 of them, Glucomannan on 9, Carrageenan on 6. Their job is to set the essence into a gel that holds its shape. A cloth sheet needs no such machinery, so a hydrogel carries a structural sub-formula a sheet mask simply does not have, and that is several entries before you get to anything active.
Longer is not more, again
It is tempting to read 35 entries against 25for a sheet mask as more product for your money. It is not. A good part of the difference is gelling agents, salts and pH adjusters doing structural work. The fragrance number is the one worth acting on. If you react to perfume, the hydrogel shelf is the best odds of any large format at 63%, against 36% for sheets and 16% for cream sachets. You will pay for it: €4.43 a use against €0.48.
What to do with it
- Choose the format for contact and convenience, not for the formula. Water is first on 89% of these masks whatever shape they arrive in.
- Trust the word clay. It is the one format name that reliably predicts an ingredient, on 28 of 28 here.
- If alcohol stings you, skip peel-offs entirely. All 5 on this site put it second. There is no gentle version of this format.
- If perfume is your problem, look at hydrogels first. 63% are fragrance-free, the best rate of any large format, though also the dearest per use.
