Two different things on a label are called alcohol
This is the single most common misreading of an ingredient list, and it is worth clearing up before anything else. The word alcohol appears on these labels attached to two chemically unrelated families.

Cetearyl Alcohol is in 51masks here and it is a wax. It does not evaporate, does not sting, does not dry skin out. Reading it as “drying alcohol” and putting the mask back is one of the ways ingredient anxiety costs you a perfectly good product.
Which masks actually contain it
170 of our 215 masks contain no volatile alcohol at all. That leaves 45 that do, around one in five, split between plain Alcohol (30 masks) and Alcohol Denat. (16), which is the same molecule with a bittering agent added so it cannot be drunk and cannot be taxed as a beverage.

Neither name tells you anything the other does not. There is no EU concentration limit on ethanol in cosmetics; what the Regulation controls is the denaturant, capping methanol at 5% of the alcohol content. So the label gives you no dose, only a position. Which turns out to be enough.
Position #2 versus position #34
An ingredient list is ranked by weight down to about 1%, so an alcohol printed second is most of what you are putting on your face, and an alcohol printed thirty-fourth is a rounding error. Same word, two completely different products. Of the 45 masks here that contain it, 32 carry it above the ≈1% line and 13 carry it below.

Ingredient-scoring apps that flag “contains alcohol” treat both tables as the same finding. They are not the same finding. One is a formula built around a volatile solvent; the other is a few hundredths of a per cent used to dissolve a fragrance or an extract, in a stretch of the list where order is arbitrary anyway.
Why every peel-off mask has alcohol near the top
The highest placings are not random, and this is the part that made the pattern click. All 5 peel-off masks on this site print a volatile alcohol in the top handful of entries.
That is chemistry, not corner-cutting. A peel-off mask has to form a continuous plastic film on your face and then dry hard enough to lift off in one piece. The film-forming polymer needs a solvent that will carry it evenly and then leave completely, fast. Water alone dries too slowly and unevenly; alcohol is what makes the film set in fifteen minutes instead of an hour.

Read that list and the format explains itself: solvent, film-former, humectant, a soothing agent, the charcoal that is the marketing, a surfactant, a perfume. If you want a peel-off mask, you are choosing a formula with alcohol high in the list. If your skin does not tolerate that, the honest answer is not a gentler peel-off. It is a different format.
The reverse case is also worth knowing
Some clay and gel masks carry alcohol high up for a different reason: a plant tincture. An extract sold as a tincture arrives dissolved in ethanol, and the ethanol comes with it into the formula. Several of the herbal masks here sit in that group, which is why “natural” and “alcohol-free” are not the same claim, and why a few of the most botanical formulas in this corpus have the most alcohol in them.
What the evidence actually says
Both camps overstate it. The frightening laboratory finding is real: in a 1988 solvent experiment, ethanol pulled lipids out of human stratum corneum. That is the source of every “alcohol destroys your barrier” post. It was also done at concentrations far above what a cosmetic delivers, on excised skin.
The reassuring finding is also real: in repeated real-world use, alcohol-based hand disinfection irritated skin lessthan washing with detergent, and a full safety evaluation of topical ethanol found no systemic risk at cosmetic exposures. Occasionally quoted against cosmetics is ethanol’s IARC classification, which concerns drinking it.
What survives both is narrow and useful: alcohol high in a formula can sting and can leave dry, sensitised or freshly exfoliated skin feeling tight, and there is no good long-term human trial of cosmetic-level alcohol on facial skin either way. What to do with this
- Check the family first. Cetearyl, cetyl and stearyl alcohol are waxes. Only Alcohol, Alcohol Denat. and Ethanol evaporate.
- Then check the position, not the presence. Top five is a formulation decision you will feel. Below the ≈1% line is a solvent for something else.
- Expect it in peel-offs. It is how the format works. Choose a different format rather than a different peel-off.
- Do not treat “alcohol-free” as a quality mark. The filter is useful if alcohol stings you and meaningless otherwise, which is why we offer it as a filter on the catalogue and not as a score.
