What it is

Dipropylene glycol is two propylene glycol units joined together, which makes it larger, less volatile and gentler on skin than propylene glycol itself. It is used to hold water in a formula, to dissolve fragrance and botanical extracts, and to keep textures fluid.

What it does well

  • Provides light hydration with low irritation potential

    Its larger molecular size means it penetrates less readily than propylene glycol, which corresponds to a lower reported rate of irritation and sensitisation.

    Reports of contact allergy to dipropylene glycol are scarce. It is generally considered one of the better-tolerated glycols.

Where the EU stands

No specific restriction

Permitted in EU cosmetics with no concentration limit. It is not listed in the banned, restricted or preservative annexes of the Cosmetics Regulation.
