What it is

Methylpropanediol is a small synthetic diol used to hydrate, dissolve difficult ingredients and thin out formulas. It is valued for a notably light, quick-absorbing skin feel and for helping other water-soluble actives spread evenly.

What it does well

  • Hydrates without heaviness and improves the delivery of other ingredients

It gives a light, non-tacky feel and can improve how well water-soluble actives spread and penetrate. It also boosts the performance of some preservative systems.

    Moderate evidence

Worth knowing

  • Enhances penetration of everything else in the formula

This is usually a benefit, but it means any irritating ingredient in the same product may be felt a little more strongly. Reported irritation from methylpropanediol itself is low.

Matters most toPeople using strong actives who are prone to stinging.
