Pantolactone
No meaningful concern for most people; irritation is possible but rare.
Also written as: D-Pantolactone · Dihydro-3-hydroxy-4,4-dimethyl-2(3H)-furanone
What it is
Pantolactone is the lactone form of pantoic acid and a chemical relative of panthenol (provitamin B5). In cosmetics it is used at low levels as a skin-conditioning agent and as a mild antimicrobial booster, particularly in Korean and Japanese formulas. It is not an EU-listed preservative and has no specific restriction.
What it does well
Adds light conditioning while supporting preservation
Used mainly as a formulation aid; independent clinical evidence for skin benefits in finished products is thin.
Limited evidence
Worth knowing
Very little published human data
There are no meaningful reports of irritation or allergy, but there is also very little independent testing to draw on.
Matters most toPeople who prefer well-documented ingredients.
Where the EU stands
No specific restriction
Not listed in Annex V and not otherwise restricted in EU cosmetics.
