Tocopheryl Acetate

What it is

Tocopheryl acetate is vitamin E with an acetate group capping the reactive part of the molecule, which makes it far more resistant to oxidation than free tocopherol. Because that cap is what makes it stable, it must be cleaved by enzymes in the skin before it can act as an antioxidant, and that conversion is slow and incomplete. It is widely used where shelf stability matters more than immediate antioxidant activity.

What it does well

• Long shelf life and good skin conditioning

  It survives storage far better than free tocopherol and gives a pleasant emollient feel. As a delivered antioxidant it is weaker than tocopherol because conversion in skin is limited.

  Patch-test data show occasional allergic reactions to tocopheryl acetate at rates similar to tocopherol. Reactions are infrequent relative to how widely it is used.
