Neutrogena

Anti Pickel Gesichtsmaske 2in1

Two products in one tube: a foaming taurate cleanser for daily use and a five-minute clay mask once a week. Kaolin and bentonite are third and fourth, salicylic acid ninth, and menthol twelfth is there for the cooling sensation rather than for your pores. dm's own attributes call it fragrance-free; the declared list ends in Parfum.

What stands out in the list

Worked out from the ingredients, not the packaging claims.

  • Contains fragrance

Listed as Parfum/Fragrance, which can stand for dozens of undisclosed aroma chemicals. Fragrance is one of the most common causes of cosmetic contact allergy.

  • 1 declared fragrance allergen

EU law requires these to be named on the pack: Menthol.

  • Cooling agents

Menthol produce a tingle that reads as "working", but they can irritate compromised skin.

  • Exfoliating acids

Contains Salicylic Acid. Use sunscreen the following day; EU law caps these (Salicylic Acid: EU max 2% (most face products, incl. masks); 3% (rinse-off hair); 0.5% (body lotion, eye/lip make-up, roll-on deodorant); 0.5% when used as a preservative).

  • 3 concentration-capped ingredients

EU law sets a maximum for Titanium Dioxide, Salicylic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide. Products on sale in the EU must comply.

  • 1 ingredient flagged for pregnancy

Salicylic Acid is usually avoided or used with caution during pregnancy. This is what the ingredient entries say, not medical advice, so ask your midwife or doctor.

  • No drying alcohol

No ethanol, alcohol denat. or isopropyl alcohol in the list. Fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol are not drying and do not count.
